The Hoover Dam

American architecture is popular all over the world. There are many great pieces of architecture in US. Buildings and historical monuments are wonderful pieces of architecture. Hoover Dam is an example of excellent architecture and great effort of professionals in construction of huge dam. Hoover Dam is named after the president Herbert Hoover who was present at the time of Great Depression in America. Hoover Dam is located at the border of Arizona state and Nevada state. The plan of building the Hoover dam was passed in 1931 and it took about 5 years to complete the construction of the dam. In 1936 dam was completed.

Following pointers describe about Hoover Dam:

  1. President Hoover passed the plan of construction of the dam and after the next election President Roosevelt took the command. The construction of the Hoover Dam continued in the reign of President Roosevelt and it took around 47 USD to construct the huge dam.
  2. The aim of the construction was to build a dam on the river and also to create jobs because the Great depression resulted in lay off situation. Many workers were employed temporarily for the construction work.
  3. Construction of the dam gave rise to many controversies like treatment of the workers who belong to the Afro American community.  Hard work was taken from the workers and no off day was given top the workers for completing the work as soon as possible.
  4. Working conditions were hazardous and workers were prone to many harmful diseases due to the pollutants. Companies who were involved in the construction faced the problem of strike of the workers because of the poor working conditions and lack of basic facilities.
  5. There were pay cuts which resulted in strike and also some demands were listed and given to the companies. Drinking water, clean toilets and some other basic rights were fulfilled but still workers worked in poor conditions.
  6. There were fewer workers who were black and companies were condemned of employing the workers who were white Americans. The possible solution was chosen and other people were employed too by the company.

The Hoover Dam has great historical significance and millions of people visit to see the glory and architecture of the dam.
