I am forever a tourist. For years I had dreamed of visiting far off lands and living amongst different cultures. In 2008, that dream became a reality as my plane soared up into the clouds and the city I had departed from became smaller and smaller, eventually fading off into the distance and was replaced by the darkness of the Atlantic Ocean amidst the sparkling stores somewhere in between home and Heathrow Airport. The moment you embark upon your first overseas trip, you are bitten by the bug and, since no trip can ever seem long enough, you are once again on a plane heading back where you came from, but vowing to return as soon as possible.
Following such a holiday, we all wish we could be forever travelling, but the harsh realities of families, jobs and other responsibilities keep us grounded right where we are for the time being. Still, the brightly colored traveling sections of the Sunday paper remind us that that next trip may only be a few months’ worth of savings away. Even if there are year-long gaps between my trips, I know I can still boast that I am forever a tourist.
The Things that I Have Seen
Whether your future journeys lie across oceans or through the great open plains of your native land, the world that we live on is rich and all of her corners unique in that we must make the time to embrace all of her wonders. I can travel outside of the United States to experience a more ancient historical exhibit or stay within my country’s borders and relish in America’s own natural beauty. No matter what destination I pack my bags for, the promise I have made to myself to travel forever will enlighten my life and inspire others to do the same.
The Things I Have Shared
Not everyone will share my hopes to be forever travelling, but, fortunately, those same people may have been present to share in my awe of something truly majestic if even only once or twice. Perhaps you have made only this one trip possible, but I am eternally grateful that it was you that shared my gaze upon the glory of the Grand Canyon or stood inside the Sistine Chapel underneath the magnificent paintings.
The Packing, the Lines, the Security Check Points
For some, the nightmare of packing and random probing at the airport can be the deciding factor as to whether or not one can accept the plan to travel forever. However, the buzz of excitement I feel whenever that final sock is dropped into my suitcase or I make arrangements with the neighbors to feed my cats is well worth it. Check-in at the airport is not held in the highest of regards, but the satisfaction of knowing that I’m about to travel again for certain is. Needless to say, this same feeling is not experienced as I pack to return home, but there’s always next time…
It’s Something Different…
For most of us, life consists of routine, yo-yoing between jobs and children and squeezing time in for friends and family. Once the day slows down, it’s three hours of television followed by a dramatic collapse into bed while we prepare for the next day. However, when I travel, I am anonymous to the faces around me. Inside, I can be whoever I want to be as I sip my cappuccino and watch the passerby’s. Whether for a long weekend or two weeks, that filing I forgot to do is such a distant memory, even if only temporary.
Conversation Pieces
I find that I have the ability to become the conversation piece at the next friendly gathering. Forget that smart little knickknack upon my coffee table. Instead, imagine the widening eyes of your friends and family after beginning a sentence with “when I was in Rome”. Talking travel not only helps me relive my excursions, but hopefully entices the interests of others, encouraging them to join you the next time you board a plane. By doing this, you’ll smile, knowing that it’s back on the road for you and that another world of experiences await you.
In light of these reasons, the only step that made perfect sense was to build a traveling blog so that my passion for traveling can be shared outside of my own little circle. There are so many of us that enjoy the thrill of an upcoming trip and those who aren’t quite sure how or where to start.
